Beach Attraction
Weligama (`Sandy Village') is situated in Matara
district at a distance of around 150 km from Colombo
Matara is famous for its natural scenic beauty-white
sandy beaches, lush paddy fields, fragrant spice plantations,
and picturesque tea estates.
This tranquil fishing town of Weligama is famous
for its sandy sweep bay.
You can spend some leisure time on the serene beaches
of Weligama, away from the hustle and bustle of the urban
life.
Close to the shore there is an off shore islet known as
Taprobane where a dream house of French Count de Maunay was
built on. One can also see the famous stilt fishermen in Weligama.
Weligama Attractions
Matara Fort, built by the Dutch around 1640, is a
major tourist attraction.
A 40m high lighthouse, built in 1890 to provide guidance
to the shipping route south of Sri Lanka, is located at Dondra
or Devinuwara 6 km east of Matara
Another attractive tourist spot is the shrine dedicated
to Hindu god Vishnu at Devinuwara
The Aggrabodhi Vihara is an ancient temple established
in the 3 century BC.
Transportation
Trains and air-conditioned buses are available for
Traveling from Colombo to Matara. Bus services here are quite
efficient as buses are available every half an hour.
Matara is the last railway station where the railway lines
end in the South Sri Lanka.

There are many newly constructed hotels and rest
houses at Weligama.
