Easter
Easter is the oldest and most important festival
in the Christian year. It is celebrated by Christians on Easter
Sunday.
It is the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus
from the dead. It is generally said that the name Easter comes
from the Saxon goddess Eostre whose sacred animal was the
rabbit.
Easter is also known as Pascha, the Feast of the
Resurrection, the Sunday of the Resurrection, or Resurrection
Day.
Easter is observed between late March and late April
(Western Christianity), and early April to early May (Eastern
Christianity)
Protestant and Roman Catholic Christians observe Easter
on a different date than Orthodox Christians.
Easter Celebrations and Symbols
Christians in Sri Lanka as in other parts of the
world celebrate Easter with great festivity.
Easter eggs and baby chicks play an important role
in Easter celebration.
An egg is a symbol of the rock tomb out of which
Christ emerged when he arose again, thus symbolizing the bursting
forth of new.
The week before Easter is very special in the Christian
tradition: the Sunday before is Palm Sunday, and the last
three days before Easter are Holy Thursday, Good Friday and
Holy Saturday (Silent Saturday).
Chicks like eggs are symbols of new life. The chick,
hatching out of the egg, symbolizes beginning of new life
or re-birth.
Easter Lilies, symbolize the purity of Jesus. During
spring season fresh Lilies could be seen everywhere, symbolizing
new life and the resurrection of Christ.
Easter bunny, the rabbit, is also symbolic of spring and
new life.
