Thai Pongal Day
The month of Thai, starting on January 14 or 15 is
considered very auspicious.
Tamil month of 'Thai' begin with the Pongal Day.
Thai Pongal, one of the most popular festivals of
Sri Lanka, is a harvest festival.
Pongal is a sweet dish made up of rice, Moong Dal,
jaggery and milk.
Tamil Pongal signifies the end of the harvest season, with
the hope of a new era of love, peace, harmony, prosperity,
and joyness in everyone's life.
Thai Pongal Day Celebrations
The festival is celebrated over two days. On the
first day rice pudding is made. Milk is boiled in a pot to
which rice, jaggery and crushed sugar cane syrup is added.
This sweet dish is offered first to the Sun God, and is then
eaten at the family festive meal.
The second day is dedicated to the animals, especially
oxen, on which the entire agricultural process rests. It is
called Mattu (cattle) Pongal. The animals are washed and decorated.
In Sri Lanka, "Kolams" (Rangoli) marks
the beginning of Thai Pongal in front yards of houses, drawn
with rice flour paste.
Hundreds of temples all over Tamil Nadu arrange for
community feasts in which people irrespective of their caste,
class, and religion participate.
During this day Tamil farmers honor the Sun God Suriyapakaran.
People also show their gratitude to Mother Nature for blessing
them with normal rainfall.
Before Pongal houses are cleaned and decorated and People
buy new clothes. Young people eagerly await Thai, as it is
the auspicious time to get marry.
