Dambulla City
The city of Dambulla is situated in the Central
Province of Sri Lanka
The city is situated around 150 km east of Colombo
and 75 km north of Kandy.
Dambulla has been a sacred place since the second century
BC. It has been associated with the cultural and religious
tradition of Sri Lanka.
Golden Temple
Dambulla is mainly famous for the largest and best
preserved cave temple complex of Sri Lanka
It has earned the name Golden Temple because of its
magnificent gilded interiors
Though there are large number caves in the area most
noticeable are the 5 separate caves that are hewn from a big
rock.
In the interior the caves are decorated with religious
and secular paintings, and statues, belonging to 15th and
16th century.
Most of the statues are Buddhist in nature, though some
paintings of Hindu Gods and Sri Lankan Kings have also been
discovered.
Transportation
Dambulla is not very far from major cities of Sri
Lanka. It is 148 km from Colombo, 66 km from Anuradhapura,
68 km from Polonnaruwa, and19 km from Sigiriya. Air-Conditioned
buses are easily available from all these cities.
Dambulla is connected to Gal Oya junction (Eastern
Line) in South and Matale (Main Line) in north.
