Dambulla is a small town located at a distance of 19 km from
Sigriya on the Sigriya-Kandy road. Dambulla has over 80 caves
in the surrounding. Some of the caves are used by monks as
meditation locations. Major attraction in the town is the
Dambulla Rock Temple consisting of five cave temples dating
back to the 1st century BC.
It is one of the largest and best-preserved cave temples
in Sri Lanka. The temple complex covers an area of 2100 sq.
m of Buddhist mural paintings of 15th and 16th century and
157 wonderful statues. Originally, the caves were used as
hiding places and were later embellished by several kings.
Dambulla Rock Temple is also known as the Golden Temple because
of the gilded interiors of the temple. The temple is one of
the numerous attractions of Sri Lanka and one of the most
impressive one. The temple has as many as 153 Buddha statues,
3 statues of Sri Lankan kings and 4 statues of god and goddess.
Other places of tourist interest near Dambulla are Iron Wood
Forest and Rose Quartz Mountain. King Dappula declared the
site as a human sanctuary in 10 century AD.
