The city of Galle lies in the Southwestern Province of Sri
Lanka. It is 119 km from Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka.
The old city was founded in the 16th century by the Portuguese.
The city reached the pick of its development in the 18th century
before the arrival of British in Sri Lanka. Galle is one of
the perfect examples of a fortified city constructed by Europeans.
The city depicts the amalgamation of European architecture
and south Asian traditions.
Galle was earlier known as Gimhathiththa before the arrival
of the Portuguese in the 16th century. Galle is the main town
of the southern province with a population of around 100,000.
The city is well connected with Colombo and other cities by
rail.
Galle's modern history began in 1505 with the coming in of
the Portuguese. In 1640, the Dutch East India Company over
powered the Portuguese and took over the city. The Dutch built
the present fort in 1663, and also constructed a fortified
wall and many other monuments and structures in the city.
The British took over the Dutch in the year 1796. The British
used the fort as the administrative center of Galle.
