The city of Kandy is located at the center of Sri Lanka.
One of the major tourist attractions, Kandy is renown as the
cultural capital of Sri Lanka. The city is about 115 km from
Colombo and is situated in the hills at an altitude of 488
m.
Kandy is abundant with tropical plantations, mainly tea and
is surrounded by many rare vegetative species. Kandy was originally
known as Senkadagala Pura. Sinhalese called it Mahanuwara,
which means the great city. Kandy was once the stronghold
of Sinhalese kings before it went to the British in1815.
Kandy is prosperous and bursting commercial city famous for
its cultural pageants. Kandy- Perahara is a famous cultural
pageant is one such pageant that takes place in the month
of July-August.
Kandy is also known worldwide for the Temple of the Tooth.
The Temple of the Tooth Relic houses the sacred Tooth Relic
of 'Lord Buddha' and is a great place of regard for the Buddhists
world over. The famous tooth of Buddha is a relic symbolizing
a 4th century tradition and is always associated with royalty.
It was bought to Sri Lanka in 4th century and from this time
on the temple of Tooth has been associated with administrative
and religious functions of Sri Lanka.
