Matara is a major town in southern Sri Lanka and is located
around 160 km from Sri Lankan capital Colombo. Under the Portuguese
and Dutch rule, the town was the terminus of the coastal rail
line.
The famous Nilwala River, lifeline of the region, flows through
the town. Matara has some scenic beauty in the form of beaches,
paddy fields, tea estate, spice plantations etc.
Matara has some excellent sights and scenes that charms tourists.
Attractions near Matara include:
Matara Fort: the Dutch built it around 1640. The fort
consists an old church, which is one of the oldest structures
in the fort.
Dondra: this 40 m high lighthouse lies 6 km east of
Matara in the southern most point of Sri Lanka. This lighthouse
was built in 1890 to guide ships that travel through that
route.
Devinuwara: it is shrine dedicated to Hindu god Vishnu.
The shrine is a popular tourist attraction. Every year during
July/August the temple hosts a major event in its premise.
Weligama: is a famous resort that lies 15 km away
from Matara in the town of Weligama. The town has some famous
beaches.
Tangalla: is located 48 km east of Matara.
Mulgirigla Rock Temple: this temple is located 16
km north of Tangalla and contains figures of Buddha in various
poses.
