Polonnaruwa is the medieval capital of Sri Lanka from 11th
AD to 13th AD. Polonnaruwa was built more than a millennium
ago in 11th century A.D. This ancient town is better preserved
than most other old cities of Sri Lanka. Polonnaruwa is about
140 km from Kandy. The ruins of this ancient town belong to
the 10th century. Polonnaruwa took over Anuradhapura as the
capital city of Sri Lanka because of the invasion of South
India.
Polonnaruwa got the status of a World Heritage Site under
the cultural criteria of UNESCO. Polonnaruwa is an ancient
city with its well-preserved Dagobas, moonstones, beautiful
parks, massive buildings, interesting statues.
