a lovely, peaceful setting, on both sides of the shallow Gallanda
Oya River, with a rock temple next to it, which dates from
the 1st century BC. Bogoda was on an ancient route connecting

that branches off from the Hali Ela junction for 11km.
Kandyan style
There are two different styles of painting in Sri Lanka: classical
style and Kandyan style. The Classical style is dynamic, complex
and expressive whereas the Kandyan style holds it simplicity
and stability of expression
For sculpture, most of works are dominated by the Buddha
images, particularly in Kandyan style. In early times, the
statues of Buddha were often carved from the rocks of limestone
cliffs. Over the centuries, other kinds of materials have
also been adopted for sculpting the statutes of Buddha such
as jade, rock, crystal, marble, emerald, ivory, coral, wood,
and metal in Kandyan style. The ornamental sculptures on the
staircases of Buddhist shrines and palaces reveal exquisite
skill of Sri Lankan sculptors.
The temple has painting and architectural work of Kandyan
style.
A striking but spectacular part of the paintings lie on the
rock cave's ceiling. Here the paintings having the astrological
chart, with their symbols well featured. On the temple roof
ceiling if the image house are paintings of the lotus flower
in full bloom and its tendrils winding around have been artistically
executed.
