Muthiyangana is a Cetiya erected by King Devanampiya Tissa
in Sri Lanka, enshrining the relics of Lord Buddha. The site
has been blessed by Lord Buddha, who spent a few moments absorbed
in ecstatic meditation.
Sela Cetiya is one of the 16 main places of worship and is
situated to the west of Jetavanaramaya in the ancient sacred
city of Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. King Lajjitissa who ruled
in the first century B.C constructed this. Just the diameter
of the base of the stupa is 37 ½ feet. A moonstone
and guard stones can be seen here.
Muthiyangana
Aryans arrived in Sri Lanka late in the 6th century B.C.,
probably from India. Buddhism was introduced in the beginning
in about the mid-third century B.C., and a great civilization
developed at the cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa.
In the 14th century, a south Indian dynasty seized power in
the north and established a Tamil kingdom. Occupied by the
Portuguese in the 16th century and by the Dutch in the 17th
century, the island was granted to the British in 1796. It
became a crown colony in 1802, and was united under British
rule by 1815. Ceylon became independent in 1948; its name
was changed to Sri Lanka in 1972.
King Devanampiyatissa
King Tissa is considered to be the first dedicated King of
Sri Lanka who was also a close friend of the contemporary
Indian Emperor Asoka.
When Tissa sent envoys to Asoka with presents. The Emperor
in return presented various honors on the envoys and on Tissa
and sent everything that was required for the loyalty of a
king.
In addition, the envoys were asked to convey to Tissa that
he had declared himself a lay disciple of Sakyamuni Buddha.
Buddhist Art and Culture
Arahat Mahinda's arrival in Sri Lanka can be regarded as the
beginning of Sinhala culture. He brought to Lanka not only
a new religion but also a whole civilization then at the height
of its glory.
He introduced art and architecture into the island along
with Sangharamas. He can be regarded as the father of Sinhalese
literature.
Arahat Mahinda brought to the island of the Sinhalese the
commentaries of the Tripitaka and put them into Sinhalese
for the benefit of the people. He thus made Sinhalese a literary
language and inaugurated its literature.
Establishment of Buddhism in Sri Lanka influenced the development
of Sinhala Culture and the Arts.
The foundation of Sinhala Culture was Buddhism. After Buddhism
was established in Sri Lanka, it began to develop with the
royal backing provided for it. In a civilization based on
Buddhism many changes took place.
