The island country of Sri Lanka, known as the Island of Serendipity,
is located in Indian Ocean to the south of India. The island
is separated from India by Palk Strait. Total area of Sri
Lanka is 65610 sq km (including Land area: 64740 sq km and
Water area: 870 sq km).
Sri Lanka lies exactly above the equator - between 5°
55'N and 9° 55' N and between the eastern longitudes 79°
42' and 81° 52'. The maximum length and width of Sri Lanka
is 435 km and 225 km respectively.
This Southern Asian country has a coastline as long as 1,340
km. As far as the climate of Sri Lanka is concerned, it enjoys
tropical monsoon. The country receives northeast monsoon during
December to March and southeast monsoon during June to October.
Sri Lankan terrain is mostly low, flat to rolling plain with
mountains in the south-central interiors. Limestone, graphite,
mineral sands, gems, phosphates, clay and hydropower are the
natural resources found in Sri Lanka. The island is touched
by natural hazards like occasional cyclones and tornadoes.
Sinhala is the official and national language of Sri Lanka.
Tamil is also used extensively.
English is commonly used in government and is spoken competently
by about 10% of the population.
Sri Lanka has a total population of around 20 million people
with the major ethnic groups including Sinhalese (74%), Tamil
(18%), Moor (7%), Burgher, Malay and Vedda (1%). 70 % of the
Sri Lankan population follow Buddhism as the major religion
and the rest follow Hinduism, Christianity and Islam.
Colombo is the widely known commercial capital of Sri Lanka
and a miniature town in Colombo named Sri Jayewardenepura
Kotte is the legislative capital of the country.
